Until we decide to change something, we never know the extent of our knowledge or ignorance. It is important to be open and willing to test this out for yourself.
Swami Vivekananda once said:
“Experience is the only source of knowledge.”

In response to last month’s blog post about the importance of Sattvic food, a reader sent me this question:
“Ma, people are telling me not to stop eating onion and garlic because it will affect the sperm count.”
Here is some information about the kinds of food that enhance sperm production and the sperm count in men:
Garlic is only one of the foods that enhances the sperm production. Banana, Spinach, Walnut, and Pumpkin seeds also serve the same purpose.
A new study shows that causes for decline in sperm count is mostly related to lifestyle!
It is not sattvic food. It is not worship and other spiritual practices that give Sattvic Ananda that reduces sperm count. It is more to do with your daily lifestyle, stress, toxin levels, and hormones in your body.
The good news is that you can rebuild your body. Body is the basis for all your future achievements. Design your body through Yoga. Design your mind, so that no suffering can touch you. It is an investment of time and intention. It is possible if you take time and work on it with awareness.
The mind is a powerful tool. In this instance, one can use the mind as a tool, as a companion to enhance ones life and body. The mind can also help one to create the body they want. A firm intention to have a strong body is the first step in this process. Yoga is one of the best technique available for healing the body and stabilizing the mind.
So, the short answer to the question is :
No, the sattvic diet does not decrease the sperm count.
Sattvic diet can be safely followed by pregnant women and people who are recovering from illness or surgery. It helps you to have a clear mind and keeps your body fresh by flushing out toxins periodically. The selection of specific spices in the sattvic diet enables one to enjoy and celebrate the body. It flows through seasons without the heaviness and pain.
Garlic is a great medicine. If you eat any medicine when you don’t need it, you are feeding an addiction, not a condition. Similarly, eating garlic when you don’t have a heart condition, does not serve any real purpose for your body. What Sattvic diet asks us to do is to bring more awareness to our food, body and mind. It asks us to pause and ask why do we want to eat a certain vegetable or ingredient. For example, when it is cold, we crave for something warm or salty. Knowing these seasonal variations, understanding the cravings and needs of the body, and eating with awareness is the best gift of sattvic diet.
Following a sattvic diet connects you to your body, your mind, and enhances your sensitivity and awareness. As we delve more and more into sattvic diet, we see the intricate connection between body and mind and the subtle connection between our diet and the capacity of our body to hold the powerful energy shifts within the vessel of our body. Sattvic diet is certainly a path to enlightened living. You only need to try it sincerely.
